After an hour at the keyboard, Philip has given me a crash course in computer basics. I can now open a document in Word, track my bank accounts in Money, and send an e-mail.
“And here”—he clicks on an icon that looks like a little man—“is how you can reach me anytime I’m at the keyboard. This is Messenger, and if we’re both online, you can use it to send me an instant message. So if you ever need a quick answer, you can think of that cartoon guy as your friendly geek next door.”
I grin at him, disarmed by his self-deprecating humor. “I don’t know where I’d be right now without you.”
“Aw, you’d have probably gotten a book from the library and figured it out.”
He stands, then grabs one of the rectangular foam packing pieces and spins it in the air. The movement startles me, reminding me of the dancing puzzle pieces of my dream.

A.N.
A father and daughter destined to remain apart.
“Aurora? Where’d you go?”
I blink, brought back to the present by Philip’s question. “I’m sorry, what?”
“I asked if you were in the mood for a pizza.”
“Oh. Maybe.” I pick up the box Clara brought. “But I think I’d like to open this first—do you mind?”
“Why should I mind? Like I said, it’s a gift.”
I struggle for a minute to open the corrugated container, then pull out a hardcover volume wrapped in a dust jacket. As I suspected, it’s a novel by Theodore Norquest. The title, Shadowed Sanctuary, is spelled in gold letters below his name.
“I couldn’t find the book I was telling you about,” Philip says, “so I thought I’d have his latest sent to you. They say it’s his best work to date.”
“Do you think so?”
“I haven’t read it yet.”
“You shouldn’t have gone through the trouble.” The words spring to my lips from habit, but something in me is very glad he did.
“Maybe we can read it together and compare notes.”
I look up from the stunning black and gold cover. “You want to borrow my book?”
“I ordered my own copy—it’s probably downstairs in today’s mail.”
I run my fingertips over the matte finish of the jacket. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
I close my eyes, silently grateful to share this moment with someone. Lately I have been living in a state of anticipation—of redoing the apartment, getting the computer, going back to school, finding something to do with my life. But the thing I have been anticipating the most is learning about my father . . . even if I only learn about him through his books. I’d give anything if Clara would share this adventure, but she is so set against anything affiliated with Theodore Norquest that it’s a miracle she tolerates me.
I hug the book and smile at my friend. “Thank you. You have no idea how much this means.”
He’s about to answer, but the cell phone in his pocket warbles. He pulls it out, glances at the number, then gives me a disappointed smile. “I’ll have to take a rain check on the pizza.
